Image“…trying to make all schools like our largest ones may be disadvantageous to small schools.  The “one best system” of education envisioned by many businessmen and lawmakers may be counterproductive to producing effective small, rural schools.  When organizational members of small schools strive to become like large schools, not only do they develop an inferiority complex, they also lose sight of their strengths — their potential for developing positive relations among adults and students, for attaining a sense of community, for developing relevant educational programming, and for knowing students so well they do not need to be labeled…..”

  1. As a parent of a KMHS student, I am grateful for our small classes and the relationships that my child has with teachers. Mrs. Timberlake is providing great learning experiences and engaging her students in a structured environment. She is working very hard to help students understand standards based grading in her classroom. I cherish the time that students have with Lana Robinson’s experience in education. We have THE BEST chorus program and are blessed to have Bonny Cox committed to our students over the years! Way to go Mr. Zabierek on his first band concert – we will see great things from our band in the future! Parents, please continue this as there are many more aspects of our small school that we cherish…………………………

  4. These are the things that I see being good in our High School. Ms. Timberlake is a good English teacher, who works hard and has high expectations for the students. Lana Robinson was a gift to get back, a wonderful teacher. I agree, you can’t get any better than Bonnie Cox. We have one of the best music programs around, because she expects and brings the best out of these talented kids. Mr. Zabierek has been a welcome addition as well, enjoyed the band very much this year. The reason these teachers are good is that they have expectations and expect assignments to be done. Having standards only count if you expect students to live up to them. I like our small school, at Katahdin, and small classes.


    • You echo what parents treasure here and what people on the coast have told me they value as well. “A good education is all about good teachers..” I hear it so often… we all hear it at Board meetings, and, oh, last year’s budget vote! Yet they are first to the chopping block! ..while areas in which we demand austerity have ballooned (administration/management).

      Everyone talks about “accountability”, and I’ve come to hate that word Pasi Sahlberg has said that “Accountability is what is left over after responsibility has been taken away”. If you don’t trust a teacher with the RESPONSIBILITY of making pedagogical decisions about our children’s education? Don’t hire them! If they do not know more about teaching than the idiots who wrote the Common Core or (ugh) Bob Marzano? Seriously — don’t hire them. And if you can’t FIND such people? Pay them at least as much as you would a middle manager! “Pay them and they will come….”
